James (Jim) Dott was born in Eugene, Oregon and grew up in Madison, Wisconsin. He is the son of a geologist and a naturalist and spent his childhood in the mountains of the west, on the southern Oregon Coast, and in the woods of Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he majored in Anthropology and Environmental Studies. After working as a U.S. Forest Service Hot Shot firefighter, landscaper, and general laborer, Jim returned to the University of Oregon to get a degree in Elementary Education. He taught in several school districts in Oregon before teaching internationally. Now retired, Jim lives with his family in Astoria, Oregon near the mouth of the Columbia River. He is the author of the poetry chapbook, A Glossary of Memory, an imagined memoir in twenty-six poems. His stories, essays, and poems have appeared in many print and online journals including Blue Heron Review, Rain, Turtle Island Quarterly, Stringtown, Written River, Green Linden, Salal, and North Coast Squid.
